Frequently asked questions about RIC-style hearing aids

Q: Do RIC hearing aids have a blocked ear problem?

A: Plugging is a problem that occurs when the external ear canal is closed (usually when wearing custom hearing aids or plugged earmolds) and some hearing aid users tend to experience a plugging effect, which can cause discomfort. The most common symptoms are a feeling of stuffiness and loud speech.

RIC-type hearing aids are unique in that they have open ear plugs that allow air to flow in and out of the ear, solving the annoying problem of blocked ears.

Q: Are RIC hearing aids suitable for people who wear glasses?

A: Glasses wearers can be uncomfortable and unattractive when wearing an earbud because the earhook and the frame of the glasses are stacked together. Unlike conventional earbuds, RIC technology separates the receiver from the main body of the hearing aid, so a thin, hidden wire is used instead of an earhook, making it ideal for people who wear glasses.

Q: Are RIC hearing aids suitable for elderly users?

A: Compared to younger people, older users have inflexible fingers and presbyopia, so changing the battery can be a problem when they are using either an earbud or a custom phone. It is very difficult for the elderly to hold the small battery, lift the sticker, find the right position to open the battery compartment door, and find the right position to insert the battery, so the battery often falls out and cannot be found, or the battery is installed upside down and damages the battery compartment.
