Seven things you need to pay attention to before you buy a hearing aid

If you are currently planning to purchase hearing aids, here are some considerations for a smooth purchase of the right hearing aid for you.

Go for a physical exam.

Going to your doctor to exclude correctable causes of hearing loss, such as ear wax or infection. And get your hearing tested by an audiologist (hearing specialist).

Seek a recommendation from a reputable audiologist.

Ask your doctor for a referral if you don’t know a good audiologist. An audiologist will evaluate your hearing, assist you in selecting the most suitable hearing aid and adjust the device to match your needs. If you have hearing loss in both ears, you can get the best results with two hearing aids.

Inquire about a probation period.

Hearing aids are often available for a trial period. Allow some time for you to get used to the device and make a decision about whether it is appropriate for you. Have your audiologist put the trial cost in writing, whether that amount is included in the final cost of the hearing aid, and how much you can get back if you return the hearing aid during the trial period.

Anticipate future needs.

Inquire if the hearing aid you choose can be increased in power so that it will still be useful if your hearing loss worsens. Hearing aids won’t work indefinitely, but they should last about five years.

Confirm the repair warranty policy.

Ensure that the hearing aid includes a warranty that covers parts and labor for the specified period. Some dispensers may include office visits or professional services within the warranty period.

Caution against misleading statements.

Hearing aids do not restore normal hearing or eliminate all background noise. Beware of advertising or other claims made by the distributor.

Determine your budget for hearing aids.

The cost of hearing aids varies widely – from about $200 to thousands of dollars per unit.  Professional fees, remote controls, hearing aid accessories and other hearing aid options may require additional fees. Discuss your needs and expectations with your audiologist.
